Grid-tied electricity (which your home or building uses enormous amounts of) is typically generated by burning fossil fuels, releasing substantial amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The carbon footprint is a portrayal of the effect your home or building has on the environment in terms of CO2 emissions produced. For example: Let's say your home's monthly electricity usage averages 5000 kWh, which means that for the year, your home has used approximately 60,000 kWh of electricity.
